Thinking about becoming a foster parent?

It’s one of the greatest acts of service you can sign up for. But before you take the leap, learn what foster parenting is REALLY like. On this website, you’ll hear from young people with lived experience in care, families of origin, foster parents, and relative caregivers. They share why they became foster parents, what it’s like to be in care, what it takes to be a GREAT foster parent, and how foster families can help families heal and children reunite. Listen for some great words of wisdom to help you make your decision.

We hope this site will inspire you, help you learn a little bit more about what foster care is really like, help you consider what fostering would mean for you and your family and, ultimately, prepare you so that you feel more ready to take the next steps to becoming a foster parent.

Make a difference for children and youth in foster care and their families

When I saw her (the foster parent) starting to go to bat and really advocate for my child, I began to feel like like I could breathe. Like it was OK for me to stop worrying and to be able to focus on what I needed to focus and fix the things I needed to fix. And today, I would love to be able to … look at her and say ‘thank you. … You are a huge reason why I was able to focus on me and get my children back.’

What makes a great foster parent

Young person with lived experience in care

One thing I wish foster parents knew… we don’t expect you to be perfect. We don’t expect you to have everything under control. … We don’t expect you to have all the answers. … just be there for us.
